"plantcestors" was inspired by my travels through greece & the cycladic islands in 2018.
"they know they don't know and they know why they don't know, and in this, they know."
some of my first, deepest, and most visceral diasporic ego deaths happened while in greece-while being the closest i've ever been to any of my ancestral homes. the wisdom of all that i don't know about my lineages humbles me. and i also mourn the stories that have been robbed. i often imagine- and dream, and would like to think- that many of my ancestors ended up around the black sea by way of greece. by way of oceans and ports, shared food, joy, music.
in places like akrotiri, red mountains greeted me- memories of volcanos traveling through time. the waters of the aegean took me. istood in awe, honoring my smallness.
i've been lucky to travel many places in this world, and sometimes only feeling does justice to belonging. she is the closest i've ever felt to home.
this print features violets- a jewish herb of healing the heart- as well as st. john's plant, garlic cloves, date palms, aloe, grapevines, jade, moss, & countless other protective plant friends.
